As a Public Health Nursing student at ARU, your focus will be on supporting children, young people and their families in the community. As well as learning how assess and manage vulnerability and risk, you’ll advance your communication skills in order to provide the best possible care.Alongside studying the fundamentals of health visiting and school nursing, you’ll refine your research skills and understanding of policy and legislation, and apply these to your practice.Our innovative postgraduate course combines theory and practice, with one to two days each week on campus in Cambridge, and one to three days out on placement. There’s also a ten-week consolidatory placement at the end of the course.Upon successful completion of our PG Dip Specialist Community Public Health Nursing, you’ll be eligible for part three NMC registration – and ready to start work as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse.

Take your nursing or midwifery qualifications a step further with our challenging public health course. It leads to a Postgraduate Diploma that you can then ‘top up’ to a Masters Degree.

You’ll learn through a structured series of taught modules, which are interspersed with high-quality placements guided by experienced practice teachers.

The curriculum covers the theory and practicalities of working with children and families, as well as wider public health challenges such as critical policy review and strategic leadership & commissioning.

You can also expand your nursing responsibilities with the Nurse Prescribing module. On completing the course you can register to prescribe from the community practitioners’ formulary.

Careers

You’ll be qualified to work as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse, with skills that are also applicable to other roles in public health, safeguarding or primary care and community agencies.

Work placements

Placements range from one to three days a week, with a final ten-week, five-day-a-week period of consolidated practice at the end.

In some cases, you will be able to replace the Community Practitioner Nurse Prescribing module with either of the optional modules. You will choose one of the two optional modules below.Optional modules

You may be able to replace the Community Practitioner Nurse Prescribing module with one of the two above optional modules. This is only applicable to you if you already have a Nurse Prescribing qualification recorded with the NMC (health visiting students) or if the Nurse Prescribing module is not relevant to your future qualified role (school nursing students). Should this be the case, you will need to get agreement from your organisation and from the university. Modules are subject to change.Assessment

You’ll be assessed through a variety of methods, including, essays, case studies, a critical incident analysis, competency based portfolio and a critical policy review.
