The MMus in Musicology takes a broad and contemporary approach to musical scholarship, and equips students with the context, skills and critical understanding necessary to undertake original research in this dynamic and increasingly interdisciplinary field.

You will be taught by leading academics whose research interests cover a broad range of approaches and genres, including:

  • the cultural and material history of music
  • music and politics
  • popular music studies
  • music analysis
  • music instrument research
  • music and audiovisual media
  • music psychology *jazz studies

The programme allows you to develop specialised skills in researching and writing about music, and to pursue, in greater depth, an area of special research interest.

Edinburgh is an extraordinary place to study music. You will join a large postgraduate community and benefit from a vibrant research culture within the Reid School of Music. The university is home to a range of student ensembles and choirs, and located in a capital city with a dynamic cultural scene.

Endgültigkeit

On graduating, you will be equipped with the skills necessary to pursue a higher research degree in musicology, or take your knowledge into areas such as music criticism and journalism, arts administration and curatorship, or music librarianship.

The programme consists of seven courses, including the final 15,000-word dissertation.

Taught courses include:

  • Introduction to Musicology
  • Research Methods
  • Music, Philosophy and Politics
  • Making Sense of Popular Music
  • An elective course chosen by you from a very wide range across the university

There are also two research-based courses, both taught through one-to-one supervision:

  • Individual Research Project, a smaller project leading to a 5,000-word essay
  • MMus Dissertation, a larger research project that forms the culmination of the programme

Our teaching combines small-group seminars and individual supervision. Assessment is through a combination of written submissions and presentations.

The programme is designed to help students become increasingly independent in their study while providing the necessary supervisory support.

The weekly Music Research Seminar Series form an integral part of the programme and provide an insight the work of local, national and international researchers.

More information on the programme can be found on the programme website.
