SOS - School of Sustainability, Post-graduate "Practice Academy" founded by Mario Cucinella to train new experts in the field of sustainability, launches the Master in Sustainable Design, a 10 months full time program starting in October 2019.
The Master in Sustainable Design of SOS - School of Sustainability is open to fresh graduates and young professionals in the fields of architecture and engineering who wish to undertake a practice-based, research driven training aimed at achieving knowledge and skills in the field of sustainability.
The Master offers a open and inclusive training program that enhance the individual students abilities, the knowledge of the internal experts and the external consultants, within the professional context of Mario Cucinella Architects (MC A).
"People have changing desires and needs while facing new economic, environmental and social challenges. Architecture and urban design are called upon to provide appropriate responses in harmony with the environment and the cultural context. However, there is a clear disconnect between aspirations and outcomes when it comes to sustainability. To bridge the gap, we must redraw the professional figure of the architect through new approaches and visionary learning strategies."
The Master in Sustainable Design offers to participants the opportunity to work in a world class professional context and to achieve specialized expertise in the field of sustainability, making them highly competitive and with better chances to access to quality job. The Master in Sustainable Design operates as a nexus for knowledge exchange with the building industry, the community and the profession.
The Master helps participants to acquire methods, processes and practices of sustainable and responsible design.
The Master in Sustainable Design offers tools for a critical understanding of the global challenges, and guides students in the research of solutions at local scale through co-design and public participation.
The experience is carried out in partnership with academic and research institutions, industry, government, professional organization and the public.
The program is organized in three parts.
The First, running from October through December, is designed to provide the students with the knowledge and skills required to address the challenges of the future with an open-minded, holistic, research-driven, human-centered approach targeting sustainable environments. The three foundations courses address thorough understanding of sustainability, knowledge and skills required to deliver climate aware Environmental Design and emerging issues related to the changing shape of professional practice.
The Second Part, running from January through February, is dedicated to workshops, case studies simulations and research. The knowledge and skills acquired across the foundation courses are tested and implemented thanks to simulations on real case studies ranging from projects that MC A is developing, to research inquiries emerging from SOS knowledge partners, to one shot design exercises for the industry.
The Third, running from March through July, is dedicated to Project Tracks. In Project Tracks students have the possibility to make a much deeper exploration of a key area of research ranging from the design of the next generation of architectural and urban environments, to urban regeneration, to the provision of measures and tools for granting to the most fragile and exposed communities safe and healthy living conditions.
During the ten months Full-Time the program delivers 1500 hours, corresponding to the equivalent of 60 CFU. At the end of the course, SOS - School of Sustainability rewards successful participants with a Postgraduate certificate signed by the Founder and President Mario Cucinella
The Master is open to international fresh graduates and young professionals in the fields of architecture and engineering who wish to increase their expertise and knowledge about sustainability how a pivotal tool for urban transformation. Due to the participation of international students and instructors, the cooperation with universities in Europe and Asia and the research on global issues the official language of the master is English. The study trips includes site visits to buildings and urban contexts that are relevant for the student's research, and international tours and workshops that involve fellow masters’ students, conferences and seminars. In the last edition SOS students visited Denmark, France, Norway, the UK and the United Arab Emirates, collaborating with institutions, industrial partners and universities of the visited countries.
