Master’s in Management (MIM) ESMT European School of Management and Technology

The Master’s in Management is a two-year, pre-experience program, designed to teach students how to enhance skills, developed in undergraduate work, and use them in an applied business management setting. It was developed in consultation with top German and international companies. The courses are divided into two streams with a focus on international management. One stream is designed for quantitative decision analysts (Quantitative Business) and one stream for creative and strategic thinkers (Innovative Management). Depending on the stream, students can choose among four specializations: Business Analytics; Finance & Investments; Entrepreneurship & Innovation and Global & Digital Strategy.

The ESMT MIM program uses an interdisciplinary approach: students apply analytical models to understand the global economy, product development, and new techniques in technology management within global companies.

The two-year program includes up to 11 months of internships and team projects in German enterprises, Berlin start-ups or abroad, fully integrated into the curriculum. ESMT has agreements with business partners to provide internship opportunities for MIM students. Committed companies so far include Allianz, Axel Springer, Barclays, BMW, Bosch, Daimler, Deutsche Bank, Deutsche Post DHL, EY, E.ON, Gazprom, McKinsey, Siemens and ThyssenKrupp.

All students learn a foreign language. German students will learn a strategically significant language like Chinese or Spanish; international students learn German.

Admitted students have a variety of academic backgrounds and use the time at ESMT to apply their acquired skills to economic analysis, product development, and new technology management within the global marketplace.

During the first 4 months, all students complete a business core, focusing on key areas of business analysis and management strategy, including courses like Financial Accounting, Marketing Management and Business Economics.

After the core phase of the program, students choose among two different streams. One stream focuses on quantitative business and includes subjects like Statistics, Operations Science & Supply Chain, Econometrics, and Portfolio Theory. The second stream concentrates on innovative management, including courses in Entrepreneurship, People Management and Sustainability.

Students then complete an internship of up to six months. MIM students receive advice and support from ESMT and our corporate partners when choosing and applying to the internship.

During the second year, students choose one of four specializations:

  • Business Analytics: Data Science and Data Mining, Advanced Decision Analysis, Spreadsheet Modeling, Predictive Analytics
  • Finance & Investments: International Finance & Risk Management, Entrepreneurial Finance and FinTech, Valuating Companies
  • Entrepreneurship & Innovation: Innovation and New Product Management, The Human Factor of Innovation, Design Thinking
  • Global & Digital Strategy: Understanding Global Challenges, Digital Disruption & Business Models, Digital Marketing

Working in groups, MIM candidates spend 1,5 months working on a Social Impact Project with an international NGO, non-profit, or social venture.

Finally, while working on their Master’s thesis, students have the opportunity of a second internship and carry out their research with support from practitioners. Alternatively, particularly those who intend to pursue an academic career (PhD) may opt for working on a thesis topic in close coordination with a professor’s own research agenda.
